Find out what hand-foot-and-mouth disease is and why it’s spreading across the MLB.
Mets ace Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease at the end of July.
And it’s not just the Mets suffering from what sounds like a laughable problem. Nope it’s spread across the boroughs, and now, new Yankees pitcher J.A. Happ has been diagnosed with the disease.
So just what is hand, foot and mouth disease? It’s also known as the Coxsackie viral infection.
According to the New York Department of Health, it’s a viral infection that causes a blister-like rash that, as the name implies, involves the hands, feet and mouth. While the infection usually occurs in children under 10 years old, it can occur in adults. It’s spread by contact with nose and throat discharge, blisters and feces of infected people.
Symptoms include fever, poor appetite, runny nose and sore throat. A rash will develop one to two days after the first symptoms. People are contagious from when symptoms appear to when the blister lesions disappear. There is no specific treatment, rather than treating fever and staying hydrated.
Good hygiene and washing hands are crucial to prevent the spread of the disease, the CDC says.
The Nationals shortstop apologized at a press conference for racist and homophobic tweets when he was 18.
Nationals shortstop Trea Turner became the latest MLB player embroiled in a social-media controversy on Sunday when offensive tweets from 2011 were revealed to the public.
Turner’s tweets featured racist and homophobic content. The young shortstop issued an apology through the team hours after the revelation.
Turner extended his apologies past the original statement on Tuesday afternoon by meeting with the media in Washington.
“I want to apologize to everybody who was affected to the things I said, the African-American community, LGBT community, special needs community,” Turner said. “It’s not when I said the things I said, it’s that I said them at all. I think that’s a real learning point from this.”
You can watch Turner’s full apology below:
Turner is currently hitting .265 on the season with 13 homers and 24 stolen bases. The Nationals are 52-53 on the season, good for third place in the NL East.
Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader and Atlanta Braves starter Sean Newcomb also had old tweets uncovered and issued apologies. MLB required Hader to attend sensitivity training.
No discipline has been announced for Turner.

While in Latvia meeting with Kristaps Porzingis, New York’s new coach explained that brining a title to the Knicks is his “main and greatest goal.”
David Fizdale’s top goal while he is coach of the Knicks is to accomplish something that only Red Holzman has been able to do in the franchise’s 72 seasons: win a championship.
New York’s new coach was in Latvia to visit All-Star Kristaps Porzinigs while he continues to rehab the torn ACL that cut his season short, and the former Grizzlies coach gave an interview to Sportacentrs.com, according to the New York Post.
In the interview, Fizdale explained why going over to Europe to meet with Porzingis for the first time since he was named coach is just another step toward helping the Knicks achieve something they have not done since 1973.
“I want to take the Knicks to the championship,” Fizdale said. “This is my main and greatest goal—to win the title for New York. Every morning is with this thought. Visiting Latvia and building of relationships with players so that they are more than simple coach-player relations, I believe that establishing such a link is a way to overcome the difficulties in the playoffs.”
Fizdale added that he also spoke with Porzingis about his decision to skip out on his exit interview at the end of the 2016-17 season with then-coach Jeff Hornacek and then-team president Phil Jackson. Fizdale said Porzingis “is ready to go past it” and added that “he is ready to strive for the new goals that await,” particularly since he will be returning from such a serious injury this season.
In regards to the rest of his team, Fizdale said he is looking to focus on defense and transition offense and added that he wants to have the players adjusted to moving without the ball and knowing “how to spread the court, what is a good and bad shot” so it will be easier to integrate Porzinigis back into the fold whenever he returns from injury.
If Fizdale is able to achieve his goal of winning a title with the Knicks, it would be quite the feat. New York has a combined record of 146-264 since its last playoff appearance in 2013. The team has missed the playoffs each of the last five seasons, and 13 times in the last 17 seasons. The Knicks haven’t reached the Eastern Conference finals since 2000 when they lost to the Pacers and their last trip to the Finals came in 1999 when the lost to the Spurs.
New York also reached the Finals in 1994, but prior to that, the team had not been to the championship round since winning its second title in 1973.
Before Fizdale spent a little more than a season as the coach in Memphis, he was an assistant for the Heat, where he was on the bench during their back-to-back title run in 2012 and 2013.
“I’d love to fight in the Garden again. But I believe this one is Las Vegas,” McGregor said Tuesday.
Conor McGregor is getting ready to make his UFC return, which he hopes is in Las Vegas. While McGregor was jogging around New York City, TMZ asked the MMA star about where he plans to fight next.
“We’ll see what happens,” McGregor said. “I’d love to fight in the Garden again. But I believe this one is Las Vegas.”
McGregor last fought in November 2016, when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight belt. He was also the featherweight champion at the time, becoming the first fighter to hold two titles at once.
UFC stripped McGregor of his belts earlier this year due to inactivity.
Khabib Nurmagomedov became the lightweight champion at UFC 223 in April. That same week, McGregor went nuts at a UFC 223 media day, throwing a dolly at a charter bus filled with other fighters.
McGregor plead guilty last Thursday to a single violation of disorderly conduct at a hearing in Brooklyn, after facing 12 criminal charges for the bus attack. As part of the plea deal, McGregor will serve no jail time or have a criminal record. He also has to complete five days of community service and attend an anger management program lasting one to three days.
When TMZ asked McGregor on Tuesday if he would fight Nurmagomedov next, the fighter did not respond but said he was “pushing for” a 2018 return.
“It’s not official, but we’re close,” McGregor said.
The team’s MVP chain is designed to boost morale, but there’s also a deeper meaning behind the charm.
This spring, veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin, who was traded to the Mariners on Tuesday, decided that the young Marlins clubhouse could use a little morale boosting. After some brainstorming and a little collaboration with his teammates, the gold ‘MVP Chain’ came to be.
The orange, blue, yellow and white chain features the Marlins logo. It is designed to recognize and incentivize players by rewarding them for what they did for the team, like when second baseman Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning of a game against the Braves in late July to secure a Miami win.
While the chain recognizes Castro’s contributions during that specific game, it’s also designed to honor the memory of late Marlins’ pitcher Jose Fernandez, who died in a tragic boating accident in 2016.
An inscription on the back of the chain reads “R.I.P. Jose Fernandez. Forever a Miami Marlin,” the Miami Herald reported.
• SL PRICE: Jose Fernandez’s death hit hard for the Marlins, baseball and Cuban-Americans
“There are a lot of guys here that didn’t get to know Jose, so this tells everybody a little bit about how Jose impacted a lot of lives like mine and the joy he brought to the field,” third baseman Martin Prado told the Miami Herald. “Every time he pitched it was like he was the MVP every time.”
Although Maybin never played with Fernandez, he knew what the late pitcher meant to the Marlins. He wanted the chain to bring life to both the clubhouse and Fernandez’s legacy.
